So yes, you can technically install a whole house generator yourself in Jacksonville — but the practical math rarely works out, and the risks are larger than most homeowners realize when they start.

Where DIY genuinely works

Some homeowners have the background and time to do this well:

  • Licensed electricians or gas fitters working on their own home (this is the cleanest case — they have the trade knowledge baseline)
  • Engineers or experienced DIY-ers with significant electrical and gas-system experience
  • Homeowners installing a small (10kW or under) unit with a simple panel layout and existing gas service close to the install point

In these cases, DIY can save $1,500–$3,000 over a professional install and produce a working, code-compliant generator.

Where DIY actually fails

The pattern we see when DIY installs don't work out:

Backfeed into the JEA grid. The single most-dangerous failure mode. A transfer switch wired backward (or jumped, or bypassed) can energize a downed power line during an outage and electrocute a JEA lineman trying to restore service. This is why transfer switch wiring is the most-scrutinized part of the inspection — and why it's the most common DIY failure.

Undersized gas line. Gas line sizing for a 22kW generator requires more BTU/hour capacity than most existing residential gas lines were sized for. Run the wrong line size and the generator starves under heavy load — runs fine at light load, alarms and shuts down at peak load (i.e., exactly when you need it most during a real outage).

Wrong transfer switch sizing. A 100A transfer switch fed from a 200A main panel is a code violation and a real-world risk under fault conditions. A whole-home transfer at the wrong amperage can fail catastrophically.

Grounding and bonding errors. Generators have specific bonding requirements that differ subtly from standard residential electrical. Done wrong, fault current finds the wrong path during a ground fault — meaning a person standing nearby can become the path.

Failed inspection rework. Inspectors fail roughly 30-40% of DIY generator electrical inspections on first attempt. The failures are usually correctable, but rework + reschedule + re-inspection adds 1-3 weeks to the project. Sometimes the fix requires unwinding completed work — burying then re-exposing a buried gas line, redoing panel wiring.

What it actually takes

If you're considering DIY anyway, here's what the project requires:

Permits (homeowner pulls):

  • Electrical permit (City of Jacksonville Building Inspection)
  • Gas permit
  • HOA architectural review if applicable

Materials at retail:

When the savings math actually works

DIY savings vs. professional install:

  • Labor saved: $1,500–$2,500
  • Permit fees: same either way ($150-$400)
  • Unit price: roughly the same
  • Materials: 10-20% higher at retail than wholesale ($200-$500 more)

Net DIY savings: $1,500–$3,000 if everything goes well — toward the higher end on larger units, toward the lower end on smaller ones.

Net DIY cost if something goes wrong (failed inspection, undersized gas line discovered after install, panel needs upgrade you didn't anticipate): can exceed the savings by $500–$3,000.

For most homeowners we talk to, the math doesn't justify the risk. Where it does:

  • You're a tradesperson doing your own home
  • You enjoy the project for its own sake
  • Your time has zero opportunity cost
  • The generator is a smaller unit (10-14kW) on a simple home

Why we don't recommend DIY for the typical homeowner

Three honest reasons:

  1. Backfeed kills people. A wrongly-wired transfer switch is genuinely dangerous, and the failure mode doesn't surface in normal operation — it surfaces during an outage when JEA crews are restoring power. The risk asymmetry is wrong.

  2. Insurance coverage on non-standard installs. Some homeowner insurance policies exclude claims from DIY electrical or gas work, even when permitted. If your generator causes a fire, you might find out the hard way.

  3. Resale exposure. Future buyers' home inspectors flag DIY generator installs. You either eat the cost of bringing it up to "professionally installed" standard or take a price hit at sale.

What we'd suggest instead if cost is the main driver
